Construction Skills Certification Scheme
The card scheme showing that a construction worker has the qualification for their occupation and has passed the CITB health, safety and environment test; required for site access by most principal contractors.
CSCS is the largest of the construction card schemes and the one most principal contractors require at the gate. A card is issued for a specific occupation at a level matching the holder's qualification (Labourer, Skilled Worker, Advanced Craft, Supervisor, Manager, Academically or Professionally Qualified), and every card requires the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test passed within the previous two years at application. Cards expire (typically after five years) and renewal requires the test again. Related schemes cover specific trades and are recognised alongside it under the Construction Leadership Council's partner card arrangements (CPCS and NPORS for plant, ECS for electrical, JIB for plumbing, and others).
The card is not a competence certificate for a specific task and it is not a legal requirement; it is an industry-agreed proxy that the holder has a recognised qualification and understands the basics of site safety. Sites check it with the card reader or app, which also catches fakes, and record it at induction. A labourer's card does not entitle the holder to carry out skilled work.

Questions people ask
Is a CSCS card required by law?
No. It is required by most principal contractors as a site rule, which in practice makes it essential for anyone working on commercial sites. Domestic and small works often do not ask.
What is the Green card?
The Labourer card, issued on completion of a Level 1 award in health and safety in a construction environment and the CITB test. It does not qualify the holder for skilled work.
