Gate Audits & BS EN 12445 Force Testing: A Practical Guide
Automated gates are everywhere — industrial estates, construction sites, residential developments. But a poorly maintained gate is a serious safety risk. In the UK, there's a clear legal framework for inspecting and testing them.
Why Gate Audits Matter
Automated gates have caused fatalities in the UK. The Machinery Directive requires that all powered gates are safe for use. As the installer or maintainer, you have a duty to ensure gates are inspected regularly and any defects are rectified.
BS EN 12445: Force Testing
BS EN 12445 is the European standard for testing force impact on power-operated gates. It specifies how to measure the forces a gate exerts when it contacts an obstacle — simulating a person being struck.
The test measures forces at specific points on the gate during opening and closing. Results are compared against maximum permitted values. If the force exceeds the limit, the gate fails and must be adjusted or repaired.
What Gets Tested
- Main closing edge — the leading edge that could trap someone
- Secondary closing edge — the opposite side
- Opening edges — where the gate opens towards
- Dynamic forces — measured while the gate is moving
- Static forces — residual force when the gate has stopped
Safety Devices
A compliant gate installation should include safety devices such as:
- Photocells (light barriers) on closing and opening edges
- Safety edges (pressure-sensitive strips) on leading edges
- Warning lights and audible alarms
- Emergency stop buttons
- Manual release mechanisms
Inspection Frequency
Gates should be inspected at least every 6 months by a competent person. High-use gates (more than 50 cycles per day) should be inspected more frequently. Every inspection should be documented with a formal report.
